ISHI - Hebrew for “The God who sees me.” It’s taken out of Genesis 16, where I stopped for Day 1 of my 90-day Bible reading.
One of my favorite stories in the whole book of Genesis, this name of God comes from the lips of Abram’s servant Hagar after she flees the household after becoming pregnant. She’s only a slave to begin with, and then to be carrying her master’s baby, and having his wife treating you so harshly, I am sure Hagar felt alone. But after she flees, the angel of the Lord comes to her and she responds, “You are a God who sees…have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?”
This reminder was so encouraging to my heart yesterday - we serve a God whosees us with His tender gaze. The same God who sees our sin gives us life. He sees our selfishness, and still lavishes us with His mercy. He sees our wicked hearts, and pours His grace over our lives. He sees our unthankful hearts and still blesses us with more. He gives us love and grace and mercy and forgiveness when we return with unfaithfulness and neglect and sin.
Praise in the highest for the God who sees me. And knows me so intimately. And still loves me perfectly.
